ANNOUNCEMENTS

The Second Edition Book Club enjoyed being  at Robena Medbery 's house on March 16th for supper and discussion of "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo", part one of a trilogy by the Swedish author Stieg Larsson.  This "murder mystery" was so well- written, and the description of the characters was so well done, that we decided to learn more about their activities in the second book of the trilogy, "The Girl who Played with Fire", again by Steig Larsson and easily available through Amazon.  It primarily describes the efforts of an investigative journalist whose magazine's purpose is to expose crooked and corrupt practices of establishment Swedish citizens.  He is assisted in this effort by a female "avenging angel"  with extraordinary powers of computer hacking, etc. in a  continuing effort to stamp out male injustices toward women. We will be meeting at Robena's on Tuesday, April 27th at 6:00 PM.  Happy reading!  Any questions, you may call me at 860-9358. Folks who want to carpool from Mt. Pleasant should contact Larry & Peggy Gale at 884-8197

Focus Group, April 18th following Worship: The Strategic Planning team will hold a focus group for all interested in participating in future planning of our church. We will meet in Room 103 in the Education Building . A light lunch will be served.

Our Tea room Committee is already busy planning this year’s event. It will be our 5th Annual “Seconds Please” Tea Room, held this year on Friday & Saturday, May 28 & 29 and June 4 & 5.  This is a wonderful opportunity to for all of us to serve together and raise money for missions! Mark you calendars now for these dates.

Who’s in Charge Up There? The Activity of God in World

Andolinis Pizza, 82 Wentworth Street

Sometimes in life we feel as if everything that happens to us is infused with purpose and meaning. However, sometimes we feel as if nothing makes sense and is completely unconnected to a “grand plan.”So if a Creator exists, is he/she/it involved? If so, how much? Is God a micromanager, a spectator, or something in between? And what does it mean when people say, “God is sovereign”? Come share your experiences and ideas on the activity of God in our world.

8:15 pm, Tuesday, April 27

To Burn the City You Love? The Ethics of Conflict, Violence, Destruction in Making the World a Better Place

Andolinis Pizza, 82 Wentworth Street

The great 20th century British author and commentator, G.K. Chesterton lamented that too many men “looked only to the god within. They had not enough interest in the outer world really to wreck or revolutionize it. They did not love the city enough to set fire to it.” Essentially, they were men so set upon inner peace that they were unwilling to improve the greater world at the cost of conflict. So we ask, to what extent is it ethical to embrace conflict in order to achieve a good goal? How many lives are worth the overthrow of a tyrant? How many mudslinging commercials are worth unseating the corrupt incumbent? Does loving your company, faith community, city, or nation mean you’re willing to set fire to it?

Windows Project. As a congregation celebrating its Bicentennial, as a downtown church in a historic city, and as a church family, we are uniquely positioned for many opportunities. These opportunities are spiritual, logistical and philanthropic, and each of us will more than likely seize several of each over the Bicentennial Celebration period. It's rare when all of these things come together at once, but that is the case with our Celebrating 200; Planning for Another 200 historic window project. As stewards of the incredible structure in which we worship, it is our privilege to contribute to have these beautiful architectural assets refurbished to their appropriate splendor. To learn more about how you can make a difference in this project and leave a lasting tribute for your family, please contact Bud Hay (795-2916) or Greer Polansky (849-9720).
