Bicentennial Lecture Series

Sunday,  November 16th, 2008 at 3:00pm in the sanctuary “A Walk Through History: 200 Years at Second Presbyterian Church”.

This The first lecture in the series will be an introductory overview of the church's history. The speaker for this lecture is church member Pat Mellen.  Pat is a retired engineer and currently owns a tour guide company.  He is a 1967 graduate of the Citadel, where he majored in history. History is a lifelong passion of this dynamic speaker

Speakesr for this lecture are Second Presbyterian Church assistant minister Eric Keller. Lt. Col. Keller (US Army, Retired), who has a degree in anthropology,and is a lifelong lover of history.  Formerly he was the Operations and Policy Action Officer, Department of the Army, Office of the Chief of Chaplains where he worked extensively on briefings for the House and Senate Armed Services Committees and the Under Secretary of the Army.

In addition to Lt. Col. Keller, nationally known Batik artist and Second Presbyterian Church member Mary Edna Fraser will discuss the history of the exquisite stained glass windows at the church. 

Sunday,  January 18, 2009 at 3:00pm  in the sanctuary “Politics and Second Presbyterian Church inthe 1800’s”. 

Waring Howe, attorney, Second Presbyterian Church member and former Chairman of the Charleston County Democratic Party will speak about Governor William Aiken, Jr. (also a Democrat), whose father was a founding member of Second Presbyterian Church, and about South Carolina politics in the 1800’s.
Lanneau Siegling, who is also a Second Presbyterian Church member, a 30-year veteran of the hospitality industry, and State Executive Committeeman for the Republican Party, will speak about the Confederate soldiers buried in the Second Presbyterian Church cemetery, including his Lanneau family members.  LISTEN TO THE MUSIC & LECTURE

Sunday, February 1, 2009 at 3:00pm in the sanctuary “Charleston Weddingsfrom the 1800’s to Today”

Speakers for this lecture will be Diane Keller and Jan Hiester. Diane Keller is the wife of Reverend. Eric Keller and the assistant pastor of Second Presbyterian Church. Due to the fact the Reverend Keller was formally a lieutenent Colonel and Chaplain in the US Army working at the Pentagon, Diane has been fortunate enough to travel extensively.and so has observed wedding ceremonies not only in the US, but all over the globe. She now works at the Commandant's office at The Citadel.

Jan Heister has been Curator of Textiles at the Charleston Museum since 1978. Jan is a member of The South Carolina Federation of Museums and Costume Society of America and she has extensive knowledge of the Charleston textiles from the mid-18th century to the 20th century, including wedding attire.

Larry Gale is preparing a slide show of wedding photos to be shown at this lecture. If you are interested please bring a digital or hard copy of your wedding photo to the next Sunday worship service or leave them with Eric or Nancy in the office. He will scan and return them.

Sunday, March 15, 2009 at 3:00pm in the sanctuary “The Past and Future of the Presbyterian Church in Charleston, South Carolina”

The speaker for this lecture is Adger Smyth and Colin Kerr.  Adger and Colin will be introduced by Patterson Smith.

Adger Smythʼs ties with Second Presbyterian go back over two hundred years when two of his ancestors, James Adger and John Ellison were among the original founders of the church. His great great grandfather, Dr.Thomas Smyth, was pastor for over forty years, from  1832-1873. He is presently working on a manuscript on the life of James Adger Smyth, the mayor of Charleston from 1896-1903.

Colin Kerr is director of Christian Education at Second Presbyterian Church, where he is also founder of Holy City Consulting  and host of the city’s philosophical forum, Talks on Tap.  In addition, Colin is author of two books on Christianity.  Colin will discuss th e church of the 21st century.Listen to Music Listen to Adger Smyth Listen to Colin Kerr

Sunday, April 19, 2009 at 3:00pm in the sanctuary “The A Second Connection.  The lives of George A. Trenholm (Rhett Butler) and John Bennett” 
The speakers for this lecture will be Larry Gale and Harlan Greene.  Larry and Harlan will be introduced by Ani Lees.
Larry Gale is a member of Second Presbyterian Church and a true Renaissance Man whose interests include music , photography,  computers, and writing.  He will discuss the live of George Trenholm, who allegedly was the model for Rhett Butler in the historical novel “Gone with the Wind”.  Ethel Trenholm Nepveux, granddaughter of George Trenholm and author of two books on Trenholm, is also a member of Second Presbyterian Church and she will be present at this lecture to answer questions  about the Trenholm family.

Harlan Greene is a well-known local author, a publisher of many books, and he is employed by the Avery Research Center at the College of Charleston.  Harlan’s lecture will be on John Bennett, who is considered to be one of the best children’s authors of the nineteenth century and a leading silhouette artist.  Mr. Harlan married Susan Smythe, an aristocrat fomr Charleston, at Second Presbyterian Church April 2nd, 1902.

About the music:   Music performed before each lecture was selected to showcase music of the period where the church was founded.  Note, however, that in 1809, music performed in the church would have been performed by the choir, probably without musical accompaniment.
