Missions
The Charleston Bible Society
Charleston Bible Society exists to encourage a wider circulation of the Bible and the study of the Holy Scripture by providing used and new Bibles to those who need them—without cost and without comment from the Society.
Founded in 1810, the Charleston Bible Society is the 5th oldest Bible society in the US and the only one working specifically in South Carolina. For nearly 200 years, the Society’s mission has remained the same: get Bibles to people who need them.
The Charleston Bible Society welcomes donations of used and unused Bibles from congregations throughout South Carolina, regardless of denomination. Visit the Society’s website to learn more about how you can help collect and distribute Bibles.
The Society has distributed Bibles to hospitals, prisons, air terminals, the Charleston Port & Seafarers’ Society, homeless shelters, struggling churches in the US and overseas, and individuals.
For more information, contact Mrs. Nancy Bryant, Administrator at charlestonbiblesociety@hotmail.com or 843-723-9327
Crisis Ministries
Every other month, an intergenerational team from Second Church forms to cook and serve dinner at Crisis Ministries, Charleston’s largest homeless shelter. This is one of the church’s most continuous service projects in our history, as our support of Crisis Ministries dates back to its inception. If you’re interested in helping out, please contact Molly McDougle at mollie_jean@comcast.net. For more information of Crisis Ministries, please visit them at www.charlestonhomeless.org.
Costa Rica
For the past few years, Second Church has supported the first Presbyterian congregation in northern Costa Rica in building their own church. Our involvement has ranged from financial support to fellowship and building trips during the summer. If you’re interested in finding out more, please contact Patterson Smith at pattersmit@aol.com.
For all other inquiries about getting involved in missions, please contact Kurt Taylor at ktaylor@charlestoncounty.org.
